Hans Fex raised $1.2m from 5,030 backers in March this year for his "pocket-sized collection of rare specimens. What did it mean? Relatively few musicians have online fanbases as passionate as Palmer's, but the success of her campaign showed her peers what's possible – while her honesty about the costs involved dissuaded any perceptions that crowdfunding is a route to easy money. She'd already broken down in May how the Kickstarter funding would be used, in a blog post showing how she might end up breaking even on the project, thanks to the costs of production and touring. Cue online criticism, which Palmer responded to by promising to pay all the musicians. She invited musicians from cities on the tour to back her on-stage in return for beer, high fives or hugs and merchandise, rather than fees. Palmer set off on tour, but not without controversy. What happened next? The album, Theatre is Evil was released in September that year, to appreciative reviews. “My first BIG, LEGIT studio album undertaking since breaking from a major label,” as she put it. What? I actually loved it so much that I bought Stegosoft’s other JRPG, Ara Fell. This keeps Rise of the Third Power from being an immediate classic. Everything in Rise of the Third Power is well-done, it just doesn’t innovate. The only criticism I can really throw at the game is it lacks that special edge Squaresoft SNES RPGs had. Rise of the Third Power is a 40 hour long, Super Nintendo throwback that shouldn’t be missed by genre fans. The AudioJungle composers who worked on this soundtrack should be very proud of what they’ve accomplished. The composition has a strong focus on melody. This isn’t a fantasy score meant to sit in the background. It has a traditional fantasy-themed JRPG feel, but every single track is memorable. Holy smokes! I was not expecting a soundtrack this good.
The music is the shining star of Rise of the Third Power. The game has an excellent flow with a smooth blend of combat, exploration, and narrative cutscenes. The player can see all enemies and even attack from behind for a combat advantage. There are no random encounters in Rise of the Third Power. The party gains skill points every time it levels up, and they can be distributed amongst whichever characters players want to use.
What allows characters to level up uniquely is they each have a skill tree. There are no individual character levels, just an overall party level that increases.
